WYLD TECHNOTE 022: Records for Third Party resources in WYLDCAT
In order to aid in discovery and increase the use of the many third party resources that are licensed for use by Wyoming Library patrons, the WYLD Office has added records to WYLDCAT for journal titles and other resources available in some of the additional databases.
CREDO REFERENCE TITLES
Records for nearly 500 Credo Reference titles were added to WYLDCAT in 2010. These titles were purchased by the community colleges and have individual item records with links to specific access points for each college. These records have a call number of CREDO EBOOK.
Records for Ebscohost products are loaded for the database products available statewide, such as MasterFILE Premier and Academic Search Premier. These records are completely removed and rebuilt quarterly to ensure accuracy in information about EBSCO coverage.
These records are for full text journals only, and not those that are only available as abstracts.
When a hitlist is retrieved in WYLDCAT, it may appear as though duplicate records have been found. However, the EBSCO titles will have the phrase 'electronic resource' listed after the title such as: Town & country [electronic resource]
Additionally, in WorkFlows, staff viewing the bibliographic records can see that both the title control number and the 035 tag contain a distinctive EBSCO resource number which begins with the letters 'ebs' or 'ebps' Additional tags on these records should make it quite obvious that these are EBSCO records.
GALE VIRTUAL REFERENCE LIBRARY (GVRL)
Several thousand records for the Gale Virtual Reference Library (electronic books) are available in WYLD. These records are loaded with individual holdings for each library with rights to the product, as availability varies statewide. Gale provides periodic updates to the GVRL records, and these are added on a continuing basis. To reduce duplicates, the WYLD Office collapsed individual volume records for multi-volume sets such as this and will update volumes as they are added by Gale.
415 Records for Project Gutenberg eBooks and 51 eAudiobooks were added to WYLDCAT in February of 2011. These records were obtained from the Colorado Library Consortium's 'E-Discover the Classics' project [ see http://www.clicweb.org/index.php for more information ]. These items were loaded as item EBOOK and EAUDIOBOOK, with a call number of GUTENBERG EBOOK or GUTENBERG EAUDIOBOOK. The item record attached to each title is owned by the library 'WYLD'.
LITERATURE CRITICISM ONLINE
Records for this Gale product were added in the summer of 2010 for the community colleges with individual item records and 856 links for each college. A sample record is 'Children's Literature Review'. To reduce duplicates, the WYLD Office collapsed individual volume records for multi-volume sets such as this and will update volumes as they are added by Gale.
NINETEENTH CENTURY NEWSPAPERS
Records for this Gale product were added first to for all the community colleges within item records for each college. However, WYLD later added a statewide subscription to this product and the WYLD Office added an additional item record and 856 link for statewide access as part of the WYLD library. To see an example, search for the title 'Woonsocket Patriot' in WYLD.
These records are cataloged as owned by the WYLD library, and therefore are only found when searching all libraries or a search group of libraries that includes WYLD. More details about eAudiobooks are available at http://gowyld.net/econtent/. These records are loaded with a call number of EAUDIO BOOK and item type of EAUDIOBOOK. A subset of the Children's and Young Adult title list has been cataloged as item type J-EAUDIOBK.
OXFORD REFERENCE ONLINE PREMIUM
As with the Gale Virtual Reference Library records above, these records are added with individual holdings for subscribing institutions only (academic libraries). These records have a distinctive call number of OXFORD REF.
As with the Gale Virtual Reference Library records above, these records are added with individual holdings for subscribing institutions only (academic libraries). These records have a distinctive call number of STATREF. added January 2012, 64 original records
NOTES ABOUT SEARCHING AND ACCESS
The records for statewide Ebscohost subscriptions, eAudiobooks and Nineteenth Century Newspapers are owned by the library 'WYLD' - WYLD Electronic Resources. Therefore, a search must either include the WYLD library or be for ALL libraries to find these items. Most libraries have asked to have the WYLD library removed from their default search group. These libraries need to be aware that their searches must be expanded to ALL libraries to find these records.
Gale Virtual Reference Library and Oxford Reference records are owned by the subscribing libraries. Unless a search is either limited to one of those libraries or searches ALL libraries, these records will not be found.
Resources that are available statewide use a proxy server link that will take the user directly to the resource. For those resources that are individually licensed, links will direct the user to either the alternate WSL proxy server or their own campus proxy server, in the case of academic libraries.
