Online Quality Committee
Conference Call
Wednesday, August 30, 2006, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

  1. Call to Order
  2. Roll call
    1. All members were present. Des and Bobbi represented WSL/WYLD.
  3. Introductions
    1. Committee members had sent out biographical info to each other by email prior to the meeting.
  4. Select Recorder
    1. Stephen agreed to record for this meeting. Beth will continue to explore getting a more permanent recorder for this year.
  5. Changes or additions to the agenda
    1. No changes were made.
  6. Projects for the committee to review and prioritize for the coming year
    1. Serials
      1. Bobbi raised this area of discussion. There are several distinct issues here:
      2. Libraries have continued to have more than 60 of their barcodes on individual records (such as weekly magazines specifically). This creates big load-time issues, making record maintenance very difficult.
      3. Some single editions/issues are still on records by themselves when they should be merged to the proper serial record.
      4. Bobbi said this could be a lower priority if there were other urgent matters.
    2. Direct patron input and reviewing searching techniques
      1. Stephen raised this idea, from something Des had mentioned before.
      2. Could a comment form be generated when a patron search recoups no results, so they tell us what they were looking for?
      3. Could a log of searches be analyzed to see how patrons use our catalog?
      4. Des said both were potentially doable, but that we’d have to look at specifics like scope and distribution. For example, would comment form results go to the home library, or to WSL, or DQCOM?
    3. Duplicate bib records
      1. Bobbi raised this issue. There are still many issues with duplicate bib records, usually due to title control number issues. The main sources of this at the moment are the new “ISBN13’s”, and records loaded from Baker and Taylor.
      2. This is a potential issue to work with the training committee on.
      3. All libraries should be using “islo” for the title control rule when loading records.
      4. An “ISBN13” should not be used as title control number until the GL 3.1 upgrade, which will be around New Years.
    4. Item types and item categories
      1. These have been narrowed down greatly and their use has stabilized.
      2. The main anomaly at the moment is the use of age-specific item types in some situations (JUV-VIDEO for example) and not others (no YA_VIDEO).
      3. Specifically, Teton has requested a new, shadowed, location for staff materials.
        1. The committee will study this proposal and vote next month.
    5. eAudiobooks service
      1. This was generally felt to be a top priority, due to the currency and importance of the issue.
      2. There are several questions to be answered:
      3. To load or not load records for these into Sirsi?
      4. If we do load, how do we set them up?
        1. How do we assign “Library” holdings for them?
          1. Do we create a barcode on each record for every library in WYLD? This could be very onerous.
          2. Do we just have one, for “WYLD-ER” as “library”? This could dilute find-ability.
          3. Do we create a new “library” just for these? This would cost about $3000.
        2. How do we handle formatting and display issues?
        3. Des is going to try to get a demo set up so we can look at how some of the possibilities would work for these.
    6. Any other ideas?
      1. No one had other issues to raise at the moment.
      2. Priorities were decided as follows (in order):
        1. eAudioBooks
        2. Item Types/locations
        3. Serials
        4. Direct patron input
        5. Duplicate records
    7. Des had some informational announcements
      1. Wyoming Sanborn Maps will be available soon statewide online from WYLD. This was funded by the University.
      2. WYLD has been “deep” linking with OCLC’s new “Free WorldCat” web site, so that patrons can find out what we own when they search there.
        1. There still are some issues with holdings from only certain libraries showing in the holdings interface (Specifically, Laramie and Sweetwater Counties). WYLD will be working on loading all library holdings in OCLC’s database so that patrons can see all library holdings there.
        2. Des may create some illustrative documentation to better explain this complicated issue, possibly in the form of a Technote.
  7. Schedule next meeting, sometime in late September
    1. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 4 at 10 AM.
