Wyoming Reads: The Dream of a Statewide Literacy Celebration

What if every first grader in Wyoming gathered together in their home communities on the same day for a reading celebration? This is the dream behind Wyoming Reads which will become a reality on May 16, 2006.

Communities wishing to participate in Wyoming Reads will receive personalized hardback books provided by the Sue Jorgensen Library Foundation and will be partnered with a mentor from the Casper Cares, Casper Reads planning committee for guidance on organizing their event. It is imperative that interested communities contact John Jorgensen at 307 577-3477 in early December with the number of elementary schools participating.

Wyoming Reads is sponsored by the Sue Jorgensen Library Foundation, which was founded in 1996 by John Jorgensen in memory of his late wife, Sue. In 1998, Jorgensen initiated Casper Cares, Casper Reads to honor Sue's dedication to childhood literacy. Over the past seven years that Casper Cares, Casper Reads has taken place, the Sue Jorgensen Library Foundation has presented more than 6,000 books to area children. The foundation is looking forward to the opportunity to share this gift with all Wyoming first graders. Based on Casper Cares, Casper Reads, the premise of Wyoming Reads is that all first graders from a city, town, or county (that decision is left to the community) will gather at one location in the community for a day of storytelling and a special lunch. Additionally, it is hoped each child will receive their first library card.

Call for 2006 Coming Up Taller Award Nominations

Each year the Coming Up Taller Awards recognize and reward outstanding after-school and out-of-school arts and humanities programs for underserved children and youth. Award recipients receive $10,000 each, an individualized plaque, and an invitation to attend the annual Coming Up Taller Leadership Enhancement Conference. We encourage programs initiated by museums, libraries, performing arts organizations, universities, colleges, arts centers, community service organizations, schools, businesses, and eligible government entities to participate. Train the Trainer Follow-up Survey

Wyoming Institute for Disabilities Resource Library revised website

The recently revised website for the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities Resource Library may be found at: http://wind.uwyo.edu/library. The Library, located in the new University of Wyoming Health Sciences Center, Room 130A, contains over 2,000 books, periodicals, videos, DVDs and CDs on developmental disabilities. The Library is open to the public Mon.-Fri. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Beth Robertson, the librarian, welcomes your questions in person Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, and by email at: brobert@uwyo.edu. Access to the collection is available through the library online catalog, which is separate and distinct from the main UW Libraries catalog. Checkout requests may be made electronically and materials loaned to patrons by mail. Please use this resource when you need in-depth information on developmental disabilities.

Help those in need and clear your library card of late fees by taking part in "Food for Fines" Dec. 5-19 at the Natrona County Public Library. The library is teaming up with Joshua's Store for its third canned food drive. To participate, simply bring a few cans of food or other nonperishable items to any NCPL branch, including the bookmobile, and we will clear your account of all late fees or, if you have lost your library card, we'll replace it for free. All food will be donated to Joshua's Storehouse (collection accounts and fines for missing and/or damaged items do not apply to this program).

Niobrara County Library is also taking non-perishable food for fines throughout the month of December. Their "Food for Fines" will benefit the Department of Family Services.

The Teton County Library Foundation invites the community to "Open the Season, Open a Book," during a festive evening of fine food and music at its third annual 2005 Season Opener party. Hosted by the Four Seasons Resort and Sotheby's International Realty with additional support from First Interstate Bank, the event takes place in the Four Season Resort's Cottonwood Ballroom on Friday, December 2 from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale at the library's Front Desk on a first-come, first-serve basis and are priced at $65. Proceeds benefit the Teton County Library Foundation and support the Teton County Library and Alta Branch Library.

Many of the games most common to the United States have found their way here from other parts of the world. "Asian Games: The Art of Contest," opening at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2005 at the Teton County Library, highlights the paramount importance of Asia as a source of many games - chess, backgammon, pachisi, weiqi and go, playing cards, and polo - now played worldwide. By exploring the evolution and social functions of games in Asia and their transmission to other regions, this exhibition illuminates important yet unfamiliar aspects of Asian cultures and their ongoing legacy.


Shelley Ramon resigned her position as Head of Youth Services at Sweetwater County Library as of Oct. 28th after 18 years of dedicated service. Shelley began working on the bookmobile and moved into the Assistant Youth Services position and finally into the head position when Sarah Cummings retired. We wish Shelley the best.


Head of Reference and Instruction Services
University of Wyoming Libraries

The University of Wyoming Libraries is seeking applicants for a Head of Reference and Instruction Services position.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee Reference and Instruction Services within Coe Library, the main campus library. Responsible for the development, delivery and assessment of reference and instruction services. Coordinate with branch libraries on reference issues. Provide leadership for the Libraries' instructional program. Supervise, mentor and evaluate library faculty and classified staff. Provide reference service, including some evening and weekend work. Provide library instruction as appropriate. Manage the budget for the reference collection and serve as bibliographer for reference information.

Formulate and implement departmental goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Participate in library-wide strategic planning. Facilitate communication about public service issues with other library departments. As a member of the library faculty, pursue an active and ongoing program of professional development, research and service. Report to the Associate Dean.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA accredited institution. Minimum of five years of successful progressively responsible professional experience. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a manager, including budget and personnel management. Demonstrated ability to recruit, train and motivate librarians and staff. Clear understanding of public service functions, best practices and current trends in reference service and library instruction. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills. Ability to set objectives and priorities, and engage in long-ranging planning for the department. Experience in the design and delivery of library instruction. Knowledge of current technology and its application to reference services.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Progressively responsible experience in the management and delivery of public services in an academic or research library. Proven record of innovation in planning and delivery of reference and information services. Evidence of instruction program assessment skills. Experience in an Information/Knowledge Commons service environment. Strong record of professional accomplishment.

APPLICATION AND SALARY: Review of applications will begin on January 16, 2006. The minimum salary is $55,000 dependent on qualifications and experience; 12-month appointment, 22 days vacation; sick leave, group health insurance, state and TIAA-CREF retirement plans, no state income tax.
