FAQ: Digital Media Management System

July 16, 2007

The Wyoming State Library is using a digital media management system to enhance public access to its collection of electronic Wyoming state and federal documents. The documents are available in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). You will need the Adobe Acrobat reader to open the PDF files. The Wyoming Western Trails digitization project is also located here, in JPG image and PDF file types.

Users can browse or search the digital collections directly.

How Can I Access the Digital Collections?

The user has several options for accessing the documents:

I click on the link, and nothing happens. What's going on?

Your problem could be a pop-up blocker. The electronic documents in the Digital Collections open in a new browser window. If you have disabled "pop-ups" either through your browser or through an ad-blocking software tool, the electronic documents cannot open. If you are using your browser to block pop-ups, you may be able to allow pop-ups from specific sites, such as the Library's catalog: http://wyld.state.wy.us/. If you are using other ad-blocking software or pop-up blockers, check your documentation for how to allow pop-ups from specific sites, or turn off the ad-blocking feature.

What does the "Search" button do?

What is Search and Advanced Searching?

Search and Advanced Searching are just like their WYLDCAT catalog counterparts.

Search is the default search page that comes up when you click the Search button. Search enables users to find documents based on the information associated with each of the documents, such as the title, description, and author. When you click on the folder folder icon (or other icons cabinet icon index icon art icon) you will see this data.

Advanced Searching allows you to do boolean searches based on Resource Type (e.g., photograph, art, report), Field to Search, and Search Terms. You can narrow down your search using Power Search. For example, if you wanted to find all of the items from the Chugwater Museum, select "Institute" in the Field to Search box, and type Chugwater Museum in the Search Term box, you will come up with the eleven items from their collection.

Tell me about the structure of the Digital Collections?

The Wyoming Government Publications collection splits the state documents by branch of government first (Executive, Judicial, Legislative), and then subdivides by state agency. Chronological serials are put in their own folders (ex: Wyoming Government Publications - Executive Branch - Dept. of Administration & Information - State Library Division - Wyoming Library Roundup).

The United States Government Publications collection splits the Wyoming related federal documents by branch of government first (Executive, Judicial, Legislative), and then subdivides by agency.

The Wyoming Community Development Planning Documents are organized by county that the project originated in.

The "Browse" button brings you to the top level of the Digital Collections.
